Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program

Imagine enriching the lives of children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, and military service personnel through the challenging, physically-active sport of horseback riding. That’s exactly what the staff and Executive Director, Breeana Bornhorst, do at the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP), a non-profit organization based in Clifton, Va. and established in 1980.

Seven days a week, the caring and experienced team at NVTRP provides horseback riding lessons for youth and adults who have physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities or challenges. Horseback riding has been shown to be one of the most beneficial activities and therapies for people with all types of disabilities

Riders at NVTRP have physical, cognitive or emotional challenges. Breeana Bornhorst and her team are passionate about their work.“The beautiful thing about horses is that when you sit on a horse, your hips move in the same three planes as when you’re walking – providing an opportunity to gain core strength, muscle memory and balance,” she explains. “ We offer two approaches for our rider’s ultimate well-being - Therapeutic riding working with a certified therapeutic riding instructor; and Hippotherapy provided by a physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech language pathology,” Ms. Bornhorst adds.

Running a program like the NVTRP does require space. Lots of it. In 2008, NVTRP signed a lease arrangement with Little Full Cry Farm in Clifton, with an option to buy. They were referred to John Marshall Bank, and in 2009, NVTRP worked with John Marshall Bank to purchase five acres of the total parcel. In January 2012, NVTRP, again with the help of John Marshall Bank, purchased the remaining 12 acres, and now own the entire 17 acre facility.

NVTRP has a big business to run, and Ms. Bornhorst enthusiastically volunteers, “Our business requires us to remain on site to see to the needs of our riders. We receive a lot of checks, so John Marshall Bank provided us with a remote deposit machine allowing us to make deposits 24/7 without leaving the property. It is so convenient and a very efficient way to run the business. They even personally trained us on site about how to use it. Now that’s service!”

Breeana concludes, “Bill Ridenour and Miguel Ornelas have helped us a great deal. It’s a wonderful relationship. They are bankers who actually take the time to get to know you. They are always available and pleasant to work with, and I look forward to many years of working with John Marshall Bank.”

John Marshall Bank is proud to serve compassionate businesses like the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program. To learn more about NVTRP, visit them on the web at www.NVTRP.org, find them on Facebook, or call (703) 764-0269.
