Women in Leadership Spotlight – Sonia Johnston | Arlington Regional President | Business Banking

1. Please provide a brief description of yourself and your role as Regional President of John Marshall Bank’s Arlington Branch

I serve as the Regional President of JMB’s Arlington market. I specialize in supporting public funds, local governments, title and escrow, attorneys, property management companies, small businesses, restaurants, and hotels. I’ve been in banking for 44 years and my current main focus is overseeing the daily operations of the Arlington branch and its business banking services. 

2. What led you to the banking profession?

As a refugee from Vietnam, I began my career in banking in 1976 as a teller and worked my way up into executive management, where I currently serve as Regional President of John Marshall Bank. My passion is building relationships, networking with business and professional owners in the Arlington community. I earned my law degree in Vietnam and a Bachelor’s in Finance. Banking was a great way for me to build a meaningful career in America.

3. Please describe your involvement in the Arlington community.

I have been significantly involved in the greater Arlington community including numerous Board positions and volunteering opportunities with the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Vietnamese-American Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Arlington, Kiwanis Club of Arlington, Arlington Economic Development, and the Arlington Professional Business Women Association.

4. What do you enjoy the most about banking? 

I thoroughly enjoy networking and assisting clients with their financial needs with great passion and professionalism. I have a vision for building relationships and exceptional referrals within the Arlington market. My passion goes beyond banking with outstanding customer service and personal touch for my clients. I genuinely believe in the fundamental principle to keep the customers happy and treat them with respect and trust.

5. What are you most proud of in your career? 

I am most proud of being a banker, being able to build an extensive network of community in Arlington by assisting my banking clients in any way possible. I believe in contributing to different charitable organizations which is a great benefit for both businesses and the community.
